Does this dark circle show the deepest point on earth?<\/p>\n<p>We researched this.<\/p>\n<h2>Does the Photo Show the World&#8217;s Deepest Point, the Mariana Trench?<\/h2>\n<p>This photo has been shared with the caption &#8220;Mariana Trench&#8221; almost since the advent of the internet&#8230; But is this really this creepy place that looks like it&#8217;s going to the other side of the world?<\/p>\n<p>To examine this, we resort to our best-working method: Reverse image search&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We are looking for our photo on <strong>TinEye<\/strong> and we come across some information. It lies near the center of\u00a0Lighthouse Reef, a small\u00a0atoll\u00a070\u00a0km (43\u00a0mi) from the mainland and\u00a0Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across, and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It has a surface area of 70,650 square meters (760,500\u00a0sq\u00a0ft). It was formed during several episodes of\u00a0quaternary glaciation\u00a0when\u00a0sea levels\u00a0were much\u00a0lower. Analysis of\u00a0stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded.\u00a0The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger\u00a0Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result, we come to the conclusion that this big blue pit is not the Marina Trench. This place off Belize is a coral reef.
